Mathematics

Why Study Mathematics?

During their five years studying maths at Soham Village College we not only endeavour to provide our students with the maths knowledge they need to be successful, but also how to apply this knowledge to a wide range of problems in both familiar and unfamiliar contexts. We give students plenty of opportunities throughout both key stages to practice applying their maths as well as teaching them the key techniques to help the process. Students are also taught to appreciate the elegance and beauty of maths.

We enhance the student’s enjoyment in maths through creative pedagogy, activities and by helping them see how maths is everywhere! Whether this be in other curriculum areas (for example science or geography), in their working life after school (for example an architect, graphic designer, business manager, financial adviser to name but a few) or in the world around them (for example best buy offers in a supermarket).

The five-year scheme of learning for maths is designed to build on prior knowledge with each topic area within a module clearly identifying key learning from the previous year. Each strand of learning is carefully planned ensuring that good progress can be made by all students at all levels.

If you would like any further information about the curriculum please contact the Head of Department.
