Why Study Modern Foreign Languages?

We love languages and think they are a vital part of learning to be a citizen in a global world. Success in languages leads to opportunities and jobs that might not even exist yet. The foundation of our success is a precisely designed curriculum that build learners’ knowledge and understanding of MFL towards achieving excellence at GCSE in the language(s) studied.

Students will have a firm grounding in grammar, and be able to apply this together with vocabulary and complex structures to manipulate language to their own purpose.  In addition, we aim to develop confident learners, who are not afraid to take risks or make mistakes in the move from fluency (having a go) to accuracy.  Students will develop an appreciation of the language and structure, but also of the culture of the country of the language studied.  Work with words, etymology, allows students exposure to higher registers of vocabulary in the target language, which can also transfer across to the study of their own language too.  There is a wide programme of visits to France, Germany and Spain, together with events such as Bastille Day, Japanese tasters and visits to the University of Cambridge that boost confidence in the language and cultural knowledge.  We want students to have a life-long love of languages and to never stop using and developing what they’ve learnt.
